Global ethylene capacity is poised to see considerable growth over the next five years, potentially increasing from 223.86 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) in 2022 to 310.26mtpa in 2027, registering total growth of 39%. Around 123 planned and announced ethylene projects are expected to come online, predominantly in Asia, followed by the Middle East over the upcoming years.

Asia is expected to add a capacity of 43.72mtpa from 40 new build planned and announced projects, whereas, for the expansion of the existing ethylene projects, the region is expected to add a capacity of 2.63mtpa from nine planned and announced projects.

Within Asia, China leads with the largest capacity additions, with a capacity of 27.50mtpa from 25 planned and announced projects. The main capacity addition will be from a planned project, Shandong Yulong Petrochemical Longkou Ethylene Plant 1, with a capacity of 3mtpa. It is expected to commence production of Ethylene in 2024.

The Middle East follows next with a capacity of 18.20mtpa from 16 new-build planned and announced projects, whereas, for the expansion of ethylene projects, the region is expected to add a capacity of 1.98mtpa from four announced and planned projects.
